Malcolm passed away at his family home surrounded by his loved ones on June 13, 2016 in his 76th year. Dear son of Thomas and Bella Pitawanakwat (nee Recollet) (both predeceased). Beloved husband of Connie Pitawanakwat (nee Manitowabi) of 50 years. Father to Shauna, Rachel (Todd), Mark, Lisa (Patrick) and his baby Wendy. Proud grandfather of Nicole (Duke), Brian (Angie), Ross, Roman, Roland, Geordan, Ben, Donovan, Owen, Zoey, and Lena. Survived by great-grandchildren Landon, Connor, Lacey, and Alora, Cole and Eric. Adored brother of Rosemary, Eugene (Gloria), Agnes (Luigi predeceased), Joyce, Terrance, Herman (predeceased) (Beatrice). Dear Godfather to Richard Assinewai, Freda, Eli, Malcolm and Sam Recollet, Mary Fox (predeceased), and Paulas Aiabens. Survived by special in-laws Tina (Theodore), Julian, and Caroline; devoted uncle Norman Recollet and auntie Lucy Pitawanakwat. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Malcolm worked for Wikwemikong Public Works for many years, and with GM Oldsmobile plant in Lansing, Michigan. He was co-founder with his wife and a passionate supporter to Anishinabek Community Living. He loved to golf, garden, and play Indian baseball with his children; he loved to tease his nieces and nephews and will be known for his unique dancing style. He was a supporter/helper to many traditional lodges. Malcolm will be remembered for his love for the land. He worked the land through the seasons; carrying on the traditions of making maple syrup, gardening, hunting, fishing and fire keeping. Family and friends gathered from 4 pm at the Rabbit Island Centre on Tuesday, June 14, 2016. Funeral Service was held at 11 am on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Holy Cross Mission. Father Jerry McDougall officiated. Interment at the Wikwemikong Upper Cemetery. Donations to Manitoulin Health Centre Auxiliary would be appreciated. “Kchi getemchikanaatigoonh”
