With exams about to start, and culminating projects being recently submitted, the students and staff of MSS can’t believe the 2015/2016 school year is almost over.
Mr. Robinson took students on several trips to get a taste of what a business or job in the tech field could be like. The group went to Norcat, Henley Boats, Princess Auto, LAMBAC, Cambrian College, TerraStar and Manitoulin Transport. Mr. Robinson said, “I think the most impactful part of the trip was showing the students several different career options.” He also said that the trips were enjoyable because of the students. For each of the trips there was a group of around 15 students and 12 of those students went on all of the trips. Quinton Cosby was one of the 12 students who went on all of the trips. He said, “The Cambrian trip was the best one because we got to do and see a lot more.”
The recent graduating students accompanied by their friends and family gathered in the gym to begin the ceremony. Over 600 people were seated in the gym to celebrate the milestone event. The graduates paraded into the gymnasium donning their graduation gowns and caps and made their way to the stage. Ms. Zahnow began the ceremony as the excited graduates waited to receive their diplomas. Max Chapman, the valedictorian of this year’s class, gave a very heart-warming speech and had the audience and graduates laughing. In his speech he said to his fellow graduates, “Be proud of the fact that you are graduating from MSS tonight, and hope that we will all meet again one day with the fond memories we share.” After the ceremony graduates gathered outside for pictures with their peers, family and loved ones. Carolyn Glasby, a Grade 12 graduate, said, “The ceremony was wonderful. It was great to see so much support and it was really exciting. I’m feeling bittersweet about graduating, but I’m excited to see what everyone will do next year and where life takes me, but it hasn’t really sunk in yet.”
On Friday, June 10, Mr. Doane took his Grade 10 history class on a field trip to see how their food makes it to the table. The group travelled to Mr. Doane’s farm, then went to see a dairy farm. The group then stopped at the Providence Bay Beach for lunch. The group enjoyed a break on the play structure. To end the trip they went to the Providence Bay abattoir. Bailey De Chateauvert, a Grade 10 student said, “The whole purpose of the trip was to learn about how we got our food and what kind of process it had to go through to get from the farm to the table.”
On Saturday, June 11 SHARE/ Go Green held their E-Waste Drive at MSS. Mason Golder, Rebecca Dawson, Carolyn Glasby, Kylie Cranston, Mr. Becks, Mme. Desbiens, Ms. Wilson, Ms. Bauer, and I spent the day collecting old TVs, computers, cell phones, batteries, and selling plants. Volunteers also stayed after school the following week to collect more donations. After the E-waste is weighed, SHARE will be making another impressive donation to Free the Children to support Kenya projects. The group agreed that this was a great final event for the year. At the year end SHARE meeting, the group said goodbye to many graduating members and started to make plans for 2016-17.
On June 14, students and staff voted for the Students’ Council of the 2016-2017 year. There were three positions that were acclaimed. These included the Special Events Coordinator, Carissa Holliday; AV Technician, Isaac Gosse; Junior Representative, Pierre Debassige; and Treasurer/Secretary, Hailey LeBlanc. The positions of Public Relations and Spirit Rep each had several candidates and they presented speeches to win votes. During last period, Ms. Marshall announced that Nathan Howard is the new Spirit Rep and Garret Gauthier is Public Relations. Kayla Greenman, one of next year’s Co-Prime Ministers, says, “Next year’s Students’ Council is going to be great. We have a group of great people.”
The only thing between now and summer vacation is the stressful time of exam week, but that doesn’t stop the Mustangs from being positive and making plans for the future. ‘Til next September, stay golden, Mustangs.
