There has been lots of excitement at MSS recently as students and faculty gear up for the last couple weeks of the school year. Along with the warmer weather, there have been new leadership opportunities, sporting events and student-led activities. There is something for everyone to look forward to.
The Rainbow District School Board is currently opening applications for the Student Senate, a student-led committee that can shape the student experience across all high schools in the school board. The Senate is responsible for “liaising with student councils and secondary students in their schools for the purpose of, sharing information about student activities, bringing a board-wide student perspective to the student trustee, and collaboratively organizing board-wide student-led initiatives.” Students interested in leadership, governance and event planning at the school board level are encouraged to apply. The application process involves submitting a Google Form describing personal leadership endeavours and two references from school faculty. Each month, the student representatives from MSS and other high schools in the Rainbow District School Board travel to the board office for meetings to reflect on the goings-on at their respective schools.
This year’s yearbook committee has sent out the forms for the second round of voting for the Grade Awards. The MSS robotics team showcased their robot at the Outdoor Angling Trade Fair this weekend. After a season of hard work, the team is ready for a summer of community involvement. The Trade Show was the perfect opportunity for the team to demonstrate their engineering skills to visitors from on and off the Island. Attendees of the Trade Show had the opportunity to speak with the team about their design, programming, and outreach, along with seeing this season’s robot in action.
Finally, the Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics (NOSSA) is having its tennis tournament this Friday, May 24 where qualifying students from MSS will go to compete for a spot at the provincial tournament.
