Yesterday, Tuesday, June 28, the graduation ceremony for this year’s graduating class was held at MSS. Representatives from the Rainbow District School Board (RDSB) were present along with MSS staff and the students’ family and friends. This was the first in-person graduation ceremony held at the school since the beginning of the pandemic which was a cause for celebration in itself. Congratulations to the class of 2022! Best of luck in all your future endeavours!
Even with the busy last few weeks focusing on culminating assignments and exams, part of the 2022-2023 school year has been planned out already. An election for the next MSS Student Leaders group was held. Next year’s student leaders group includes three different divisions: Student council – Three Fires, athletic association and a shared roles group. Under the student council – Three Fires division, Jocelyn Kuntsi as co-prime minister; Cat Rose as secretary/treasurer; the school event coordinators will include Katie Chapman and Alex Wilson-Zegil; the business team includes Patrick McCann; and the student leaders committee includes Tessa Merrylees, Grace Pennie and Danika Skippen. Under the athletic association, Andrew Rose as co-prime Minister; Jon Mende as secretary/treasurer; sports event coordinators, Morgan Green and Alexis McVey; Mackenzie Green is in charge of public relations; the business team is Danica Peltier, and the student leaders committee includes Annie Balfe, Andrew Cooper and Maren Kasunich. Under the shared roles, in charge of social media and marketing is Daphne Carr; the school photographer is Jorja Peltier; the school historian is Anika Smith; and the tech team will include Willow Fogal, Nevaeh Harper and Liberty Mainprize.
After a few months in the making, two Grade 12 MSS students are now published authors with a printed book! Myself, Rachael Orford, and Patricia Patterson wrote a novella for a passion project in our ENG4U class in first semester. Our book is entitled, ‘We Are The Prey’ and it is a reimagination of Beauty and the Beast with our own twists to it, including themes of feminism and growth. The novella is composed of both poetry and prose. Only a few physical copies of the book were printed, but it is available for the public to read online in PDF format. With the end of this school year comes a few MSS staff retirements. After many years at MSS our beloved secretary, Ms. Scott, is retiring. Everyone will miss you dearly! Also retiring is physical education teacher, Mr. Gurney. Best of luck in your retirement!
Now for some sad news I’ve been dreading to say. I have graduated high school, and it’s time for me to say my final goodbye to all my loyal readers. After six years of writing columns for both C.C. McLean Public School (“Colts Going Strong!”) and Manitoulin Secondary School, it is not an easy goodbye. I would like to begin by thanking Alicia at The Expositor who has been wonderful over these last four years. On my very first day of Grade 9, I came home to a phone call from her asking me if I would be interested in taking on this job writing “Kids In The Hall.” It was an intimidating task for Grade 9 me who only had one day of high school under my belt, but I knew I couldn’t say no. I would also like to thank Ms. Chapman, who approached me about starting up a column in elementary school. I never would have thought back in Grade 7 that I would still be writing columns today. Also thank you to Tom, now at the Expositor, for putting “Colts Going Strong!” in the Recorder. And a huge thank you to my readers, my family, and the whole Expositor team. I appreciate everyone so much! As for my next chapter, I am heading off to the University of Guelph in the fall for Honours Molecular Biology and Genetics (co-op).
