The winter blahs are not stopping the MSS Mustangs. Whether it is on the ice, on the trails, or enjoying indoor pursuits, students are making the most of the season.

On the ice at the Providence Bay Curling Club, the girls’ curling team earned a trip to NOSSA on February 23-24 in Sault Ste. Marie. The scores for their games were as follows: 10-5 vs Blind River; 11-1 vs. Espanola; 8-2 vs. Elliot Lake; 2-9 vs. Blind River; 9-2 vs. Espanola; 9-0 vs. Elliot Lake; and 4-6 vs. Blind River. This put the girls in second place, qualifying them for NOSSA in Sault Ste. Marie.

In the hockey rink, the MSS girls’ hockey team defeated Espanola 9-3 on Thursday, February 18. The coaches, Mr. Meeker and Ms. Addison, were proud of their whole team, especially after a rough last period. Michelle Campbell, a player on the team says, “All the girls played amazing. I was very proud of how we played as a team the whole game and were able to keep our cool. Even after the other team started to play rough we were able to keep playing as a team and not retaliate. It’s exciting to be going into the finals next week. I hope we play as well as we did against Espanola.” Fans have high expectations as the team moves into the second round of playoffs against Bishop-Carter on February 23.

The boys’ hockey team lost on Tuesday, February 16 to St. Charles. The score was 3-5, after a very defensive game for the Mustangs. The boys will be playing at NOSSA on February 29.

On the trails, the Nordic Ski team competed at NSSSA. Beth Wiwchar finished in the middle section of her age division, performing extremely well for her first race. Tommy Wiwchar finished 5th place in his race, qualifying him for NOSSA. Mackenzie Turner finished first in her race, also qualifying for NOSSA.

Indoors, April Torkopoulos and I represented MSS at the Zone level of the Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking contest. The competition was held in Sudbury on February 21. April’s speech was called Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire. My speech was called The Dreams of Children in Kenya. Both competitors are hoping to move on to the Regional Championships.

The Students’ Council has rescheduled the Winter Formal to February 26 from 7:30 to 10:30 pm in the gymnasium at MSS. Tickets are $15 a couple or $10 a person if you prepay or $15 at the door. Students are excited, picking their formal outfits, and getting ready to dance to DJ Scratchley Q’s music.

The MSS SHARE/Go Green group is holding a Coffee House fundraiser on March 3 at 7 pm in the library at MSS. The group is looking for community and school acts to perform at the event. Anyone interested can leave a message on the SHARE/ Go Green Facebook page. The evening will consist of free coffee and tea, delicious desserts and local entertainment in support of Free the Children. The group is conducting a Twitter poll to seek input on their next global focus.

Whether winter is your favourite season or not, the Mustangs have something for everyone. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
