M.S.S. Kids in the Halls

Exam week starts tomorrow and students have presented final projects and written unit tests. To finish off the semester, students’ council gave teachers Matchomatics tests for their classes. Students got to fill in a 20 question survey and hand it in, and in time for Valentine’s Day they can see who their top matches are for two dollars.

The girls’ volleyball teams had a tournament in Espanola last Wednesday, with the senior girls winning two out of four games and the junior girls’ winning one out of four games. Both teams played well, and the girls were very sportsmanlike from all accounts.

The boys’ basketball teams are having a good season and played at Central Algoma Secondary School on Thursday. The senior boys played a great game the final score being a 21- 18 win and the juniors also played a strong game finishing 27-23 for the Mustangs.

On Friday, the boys’ hockey team played a valiant game against Confederation Chargers, playing with strong offense and winning the game 5-4. One of the players on the team said, “We played a good game, and since we won this game we are in the playoffs.”

On Friday Mr. Doane supervised the weekly game of dodgeball, allowing students to take out their stress from school work, sports, and teachers. Friday was also Dress as Your Favourite Teacher Day. There were doubles of many staff wandering the halls, including: Mr. Doan, Mr. Harfield, Mr. Balfe, Ms. Desbien, and Mr. Theijsmeijer

For the students who are participating in speeches at the Legion this year, speeches need to be ready to present by February 16. So far, three MSS students have signed up for the competition. Speeches need to be brought to Ms. Marshall so she can review them.

Laurentian University is offering the opportunity to participate in a university level class this March. This is available for Grade 10 and 11 students who wish to participate. Forms are available in the guidance office. You get to sit in on a class and experience the way a university class works. The following are some of the courses available to observe are: Aboriginal Political Resistance in Canada, Aboriginal Languages, Introduction to Philosophy, Critical Thinking and Argumentation and Religion and Roots. Tours of the campus are also available.

The school musical Once Upon a Mattress is opening February 11 with advance tickets for sale at the following locations: Gore Bay I.D.A. and the Guardian Pharmacies in Manitowaning, Mindemoya, and Little Current. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and can also be purchased at the door. Showing from February 11-13, the play is a comedic version of the Princess and a Pea fairytale. If you think you know the story, you are in for an entertaining shocker.
