From dances to contests, MSS students have been busy! Let’s take a look at what was going on this week.
On Thursday, May 2 MSS opened its doors to welcome Grade 8 students from across the Island. To ease the transition into high school, MSS hosts Grade Eight Shadow Day. Each year, current Grade 9 students act as a guide for Grade 8 students, showing them around the school and giving them a taste of what high school classes are like. After touring second-period classes, Grade 8s made their way to the cafeteria for lunch. Here, the MSS robotics team had their robots on display and a button-making station. Before departing, incoming students played a trivia game with questions about MSS.
Headstrong, a mental-health-focused extracurricular, is allowing students to appreciate the nature around them through their “Beauty of Manitoulin” photo contest. Mindfulness and gratitude for the area around you can play a big part in having good mental health. Photos for the contest are due by May 24.
On Friday, May 3 students gathered at MSS for the annual spring formal. This year’s theme was Under The Stars, creating a truly magical night with twinkling lights and star-themed decorations. For three hours, students could dance, take pictures at the photo booth, and socialize in the common room and cafeteria. Additionally, students could vote for their peers for different awards including Friendliest Face, Snazziest Suit, Best Dressed, Best Heels, Most Social, and Best Dancer. These awards were given to those with the most votes throughout the night.
MSS students are attending not one, but two conferences this week. This Wednesday, May 8 students are going to Sudbury to attend a conference on environmental sustainability, in the hopes of bringing knowledge learned there back to their own schools. On Thursday, May 9 another group of students will be traveling to Sudbury to attend the Stand Up Speak Out leadership conference at College Boreal. Keep an eye out for more details on the conferences next week!
That is all for this week! Until next time, go, Mustangs, go!
