M.S.S. Kids in the Halls

To bring winter to a close, MSS was represented at a national skiing event. Mackenzie Turner, a Grade 12 student at MSS, competed at the 2016 Biathlon Canadian Nationals from March 14-20 in Valcartier, Quebec. Mackenzie competed in four races: a 6 km sprint, a 7.5 km pursuit, a 10 km individual race, and a 6 km leg of a relay. According to Mackenzie, the conditions started off slushy and wet for her 6 km sprint where the skiing wasn’t so great. Mackenzie did have amazing shooting so she placed 9th and was proud of herself. Mackenzie said, “The 7.5 km pursuit was better skiing but not by much, and it was a not good shooting race, so I also placed ninth.” In the 10 km individual race, Mackenzie skied her fastest and the weather conditions were better. Mackenzie still had trouble shooting, so she placed 9th again. Mackenzie’s relay team got 4th out of 13 teams. Mackenzie has represented Manitoulin Island very well on a national level.

The Three Fires Confederacy at MSS is looking for dancers and volunteers to participate. Regalia dancer Audrey Sampson said, “The powwow will be fun, and I am excited to have the opportunity to dance again.” The powwow will take place on April 14 and planning is underway.

On Tuesday, March 29, there was a refereeing course for students interested in refereeing for Island soccer in May and June. The refereeing course will continue over the course of three weeks. Students who are still interested can talk to Mr. Balfe. Referees can receive 4.5 hours of community service per Saturday morning or be paid $50. This is a great way for students to earn their community hours this spring.

With powwow, yearbook, photography, EcoSchool certification, badminton, track and field, Stratford, talent show and band trip, spring will be lively at MSS. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
