M.S.S. Kids in the Halls

March Break is over and students are back in school for a few days before Easter weekend begins on Friday. Over March Break, some students travelled to Europe, some people stayed home and relaxed with their families, and others skied and snowmobiled. Maybe a few even did schoolwork.

A group of 42 students left for their trip to Greece and Italy on Saturday, March 12. The students and chaperones flew from Sudbury Airport to Milan, Italy. The students have been posting pictures of their travels on Facebook and have seen some amazing sights including the Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Vatican City, Saint Peter’s Basilica, and several more beautiful places. The group spent their nine-day trip immersing themselves into a new culture. While in Greece, Grade 10 student Laura Brown said, “The trip was amazing! We saw and did so much. My favourite sights were the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Colosseum.” The group came back to the Island on March 21 to share their experiences with family and friends.

Students’ Council is once again hosting Spymaster, the game where friends turn against friends. In Spymaster students have to clothespin a target without being seen. Students can test out their ninja skills in this game. Spymaster sign up is from March 21-24. There are always great prizes for the winners. The game continues until one Spy remains standing.

The literacy test is approaching quickly and students in Grade 10 and others who need to retake the test are busy preparing. The test is on March 31st from 9 am to noon with a break mid-way. Ms. Bauer, the Literacy Program Leader at MSS says, “Performance on the literacy test comes down to effort and skill. Because students need 75 percent or higher to pass and because it is a graduation requirement, it is probably one of the most challenging tests students will ever take.” Students have already participated in information sessions, practice tests, and tutorials. Further preparation sessions will take place prior to test day.

On April 4, the gymnastics team travels to Sudbury to compete at NOSSA championships. There will be floor routines, balance beam, vault, parallel bars and aerobics. The team competing at NOSSA consists of Roxanna Rojas-Brizuela, Maggie McDonald, Yohana Ogbamichael, Eden Beaudin, Alyssa Green, Victoria Tardif, Kendra Jordison, Jill Cooper, Jadah McGraw, Jordanna Dedman, Zabrina Cosby, Emily Granville, and Donnshai Bruleigh. The coaches are Mrs. Theijsmeijer and Ms. Ferguson.

The time between March Break and Easter is very short this year, but all school activities will be back in full swing. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
