M.S.S. Kids in the Halls

There are lots of energetic, community involved events going on at MSS right now.

On May 6 the senior band and vocal group headed for Toronto on Band Trip. The group of 40 students practiced their vocal pieces and slept on the six-hour bus ride. Once they arrived in the city the group went to Queen’s Park for their performance. The band played several songs, including Rule the World and Back to The ‘50s. Vocal group performed a Queen Medley and ‘Keep Holding On’ before heading to view the musical Kinky Boots. Many students said that it was their favourite part of the trip. Saturday morning, all the students got ready to hit the Yorkdale Mall, and they shopped for almost four hours. After shopping, the group travelled to the Art Gallery of Ontario and in the evening played laser tag. Sunday morning the group visited Ripley’s Aquarium before leaving the city and heading to Sudbury for dinner at the Swiss Chalet on the way home. Donnshai Bruleigh, a clarinet player in the senior band and member of vocal group, said, “Our performances went really well. My favourite pieces were ‘I’m a Believer’ and Back to the ‘50s for band and ‘Keep Holdin’ On.’ I can’t wait for next year’s trip because this year was such a great experience.”

The track and field team travelled to pre-NSSSA on May 11 at Elliot Lake Secondary School.

There are 28 students on the team, and they have been training since mid-April. There are several events including the 100m, the 400m, the 3,000m, high jump, shot put, running long jump, and standing long jump. The team is heading back to Elliot Lake on May 19 for NSSSA. Qualifiers from NSSSA will travel to North Bay for NOSSA on May 25.

Also on May 25 is Career Day. In March, a survey was conducted with 32 possible future careers and the students chose their top eight. On Career day, students will attend six 35-minute sessions. In each session they will hear from guest speakers about the career and be able to ask questions. This is a great opportunity for students to consider future career pursuits. Half of the professionals coming in to speak to students are MSS Alumni, including a lawyer, a musician, and an agricultural worker.

The big competition for 2016-17 Co-Prime Ministers is on. Kayla Greenman, Jackie Cooper, and Bryce Mastelko have been campaigning for the position of Prime Minister. On Wednesday Jackie held a massive game of Bump in the gym at lunch, while on Friday Kayla held a Minute to Win It competition in the front foyer while she gave out cookies and painted faces. Bryce held a watermelon eating contest in the cafeteria on Friday. The winner was Bailey Chateauvert who received a stuffed stingray as his prize. On Monday, Bryce, Kayla and Jackie presented their campaigns to the students and staff of MSS, after which voting took place. Stay tuned for the results.

On Thursday, SHARE/Go Green and Three Fires Confederacy travelled to Sudbury for the 15th annual Roots and Shoots conference in Sudbury. The group participated in tree planting and traditional and scientific workshops. During the tree planting MSS planted over 200 trees, exceeding the expectations of the conference. Victoria MacDonald said, “We planted the most trees by far and we still finished early.” SHARE/Go Green is holding an E-Waste drive on Saturday, June 11. This is a good way to dispose of old cell-phones, batteries, and electronics without harming the environment. The drive will be held from 9 am to 3 pm. Drop-offs can also be arranged from June 13-16 from 3 to 5 pm. SHARE also spearheaded the MSS fundraiser for Fort McMurray The students and staff of MSS donated $548 for Canadian Red Cross to help the evacuees. The government of Canada will double the amount we fundraised. This means that over $1,000 dollars will be going to Fort McMurray.

MSS is proud to be helping people in need, participating in an election, and helping the environment. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
