Ludwig Georg Zibauer, age 78, died peacefully on May 29, 2014, after a lengthy illness borne with dignity, humour, and unflinching pragmatism. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 53 years, Patricia; his children Martin and Doris; and his siblings Rita, Rudy, and Elfriede. Predeceased by sister Francesca. Ludwig’s adventurous streak brought him from his hometown of Munich, Germany to Canada in 1957 and to Sudbury soon after. His 35 years of service at INCO were spent at Levack Mine, North Mine, and the Copper Refinery. He met Pat at the Caledonia Club (they disagreed over who asked who to dance first); the couple built a happy and successful life together. An avid angler, woodworker, gardener, and birdwatcher, Ludwig loved spending summers at the camp on Pog and, in recent years, at the trailer on Manitoulin. He could fix and often improve almost any broken machine and was well known as an inventor of numerous gizmos. He was generous with his time, always willing to help his many friends with any building project or repair job. It will be no surprise to those who knew him that he decided a service or visitation would be too much fuss, but there will be a celebration of his life to follow at a later date. Donations to Bird Studies Canada, through the giving page in memory of Ludwig Zibauer at canadahelps.org, are greatly appreciated.
