LORAINE MARTHA OTTLEY
October 17, 1950 – July 15, 2024
In loving memory of Loraine Ottley, who passed peacefully at home on July 15, 2024 in her 74th year. Ms. Ottley was born in Paisley, Scotland and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1952. Beloved wife for 36 years of Chris Stewart; daughter of Jane and Robert Ottley; daughter-in-law of Cecil and Martha Stewart (predeceased). Dear sister of Robert Jr. (predeceased) and sister-in-law Joan Cambray, Donna (Olaf Heinzel) and Jim (Maureen). Loraine will be missed by her nephews and nieces, cousins, especially Wilma and Bill Hall, and by her many friends and colleagues. After graduating with a Nursing diploma from Mack School of Nursing in St. Catharines in 1972, Loraine attended Brock University to complete an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in English while working as a nurse to finance her education. A year after graduating from Brock, Ms. Ottley was accepted into law school at the University of Toronto and was called to the bar in 1983. Immediately after being called to the bar, Ms. Ottley worked as Counsel to the Director of Crown Attorneys at the Ministry of the Attorney-General’s office in Toronto, where she remained for five years. She then moved to Sudbury with her husband where she held the position of Assistant Crown Attorney for 10 years. She was selected in 1999 as the Crown Attorney for the District of Manitoulin where she was proud to serve for 12 years, officially retiring in 2011. Then in 2013, Ms. Ottley took on the position of part-time Prosecutor of Provincial Offences until 2022. Loraine took great delight living and working on Manitoulin and appreciated Island life and its people. This was her home and she was proud of it until her passing. There will be a Celebration of Loraine Ottley’s Life at a to-be-announced future date.
