Lodge residents enjoy afternoon of acrylic painting

GORE BAY – The residents of the Manitoulin Lodge Nursing Home in Gore Bay painted up a storm during a Paint S-Capes Valentine-themed workshop recently Manitoulin artist Christine Mick hosted the on-site event for a dozen eager students. They enjoyed a relaxing winter afternoon of acrylic painting while listening to their favourite ‘oldie goldies.’

“It was a unique bonding experience for the group. Painting is an activity they had never done before at the Lodge, so they were very excited. It gave them the opportunity to take part in creative activity that some said they had not done in 80 years,” said Ms. Mick. “The eldest in the class was 94-year-old Jean Robinson. She did great and was very proud of her piece.”

The residents’ fees were sponsored by the recreation committee. Friends and family were also encouraged to join for a small fee ($25).

“I use art as a healing tool. My goal is to inspire people of all ages to discover the benefits of painting, and hopefully start experimenting on their own. There is no better way to stay in the moment and feel like a kid again than to pick up a crayon or a paintbrush. It helps lower blood pressure, raise endorphins and self-confidence. There are so many positive outcomes,” said Ms. Mick.

Beautiful paintings! Several residents of the Manitoulin Lodge Nursing Home in Gore Bay displayed their excellent painting skills at a Valentine-themed workshop hosted by Manitoulin artist Chris Mick of Paint S-Capes.
