Local martial arts team takes part in major tournament

GORE BAY—Members of the Empower Martial Arts team took part in the Shamuon Generation of Martial Arts (GMA) tournament earlier this month.

“We had five students travel to Waterloo to take part in the GMA Championships on June 3,” said Anya Wright, sensei of the local martial arts school. “There was quite a large turnout of participants at this competition compared to our earlier events in Sudbury.”

The local martial arts team members who took part in the tournament included Tommy Joyce and Cameron Chaytor, who are both eight, Sarah Joyce and Emma Chaytor, who are both 10, and David Joyce, aged 12.

Over 500 competitors and 37 different martial arts clubs took part in the tournament, said Ms. Wright.

While the local team members did not place among the top three in their divisions, “they certainly learned a lot,” said Ms. Wright. “This was the students first really big tournament.”
