PROVIDENCE BAY—Providence Bay Junior curling club members represented themselves very well at a under-15 junior curling bonspiel held at the Idylwylde Curling Club in Sudbury recently.
“We had a lot of kids, 18, take part in the bonspiel,” said coach Angela Johnston. “We had three age divisions of players taking part, from age 5-7, 8-12 and 11-13.
Mr. Johnston explained, “the older team, ages 11-13, I’ve been working with and they took part in the two-day bonspiel playing four six end games over two days.” The team finished fourth among a total of eight teams participating in the bonspiel.
Members of the age 11-13 team included Spencer Johnston, Eric Wahl, Devon MacKelvie, Liam McLean and Silva Verboom. They participated in the under 15 age division of the bonspiel, “so our team of 12-13 years old was playing against teams with players 14-15 years old. They did well representing the Island and the club.”
Ms. Johnston explained in the youngest age division age 5-7, Providence Bay junior curlers Tommy and Joshua Joyce took part. “They played in the half sheet little rocks division.”
“We had two teams take part in the 8-12 age one day full ice division,” said Ms. Johnston. “We didn’t keep track of wins or losses, but they played really well, and learned a lot about the game.”
The two teams included Parker Johnston, Charlie Orford, Lexi Fisher, David Joyce and Shawn MacKelvie with coach Allison Orford. The second team included John and Cordelia McLean, Lila Fisher, Shane Cranston, Alice McIntosh and Nico Long. The team was coached by Marc Lefebvre. The two teams played three, four end games, and all received medals at the end of the day for their efforts.
