NEWMARKET—A Barrie Island resident, now living in Newmarket, is on a team that has qualified for the Ontario Men’s’ Dominion Tankard curling championship, which is the last step to a berth in the Canadian Brier championships.
“My son Patrick is on a rink going to Smiths Falls (next week) for the Ontario provincials and if the win their they go to the Brier championships,” said Lillian Greenman of her son last Friday.
“I’m a member of a team that represents the Thornhill Golf and Country Club and is going to the provincials,” said Mr. Greenman, when contacted by the Recorder. The rink, which includes Ted Anderson as lead, skip Rob Lobel, with the latter’s brother Steve Lobel on vice, and Mr. Greeman as second.
Mr. Greenman explained that in qualifying for the provincials, “we had to go through two rounds of competitions in southern Ontario; the zones where we finished on the B side (second place overall) in Richmond Hill, and then the regions (having to win three games, with eight teams participating) (held in Lakefield), where we were the winners on the A side (first place overall).”
“This is the first year I’ve played with this team,” Mr. Greenman said. “The Lobel brothers have been on the same team for over 30 years, and I was fortunate that the team asked me to play this year.”
“No, I’ve never been to the men’s provincials, although the guys I’m playing with have been there a few times,” said Mr. Greenman.
“We going to go to Smiths Falls to watch Patrick and his team play,” said Ms. Greenman, noting “he had curled when he grew up and lived here on the Island,” she said. She pointed out her daughter-in-law Sheri Greenman used to be a member of Sherry Middaugh’s curling team. Patrick and Sheri have two children: Alyssa, age five, and Brady, who is three.
“Patrick had stopped curling for a little while his family was growing, but I’m really glad that he is back in it,” said Ms. Greenman.
“I’m not going to say that we are not going to win, but we have our work cut out for us; we won’t be the favourites, but we certainly have a chance,” said Mr. Greenman. He noted the competition will be fierce at the provincials and includes teams like the Glenn Howard and John Epping rinks taking part.
