Little Current Lions Club Winterfest 2024!

LITTLE CURRENT— The 2024 edition of the Little Current Lions Club’s longstanding Winterfest Weekend starts this Friday, February 2.

Some things are happening across the whole weekend.

For example, the Manitoulin Nordic Ski Club is hosting a ‘Try our Trails’ event so find your cross-country gear and/or snowshoes and head off to any of the club trails: Honora Bay, Maple Ridge (at Community Living Manitoulin’s property in Mindemoya) and McLean’s Park in Assiginack (off New England Road). No charge.

The Expositor is once again sponsoring a snow sculpture contest, open to residents of the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin, Sheguiandah First Nation and Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation. To register, call Debbie at 705-368-2744 by 4 pm on Friday, February 2 or email (also by 4 pm) to services@manitoulin.com.

The Manitoulin Snowdusters Snowmobile Club is again hosting its Island wide poker run, this year in memory of Todd, ‘T.C.’ Corbiere. This event runs much longer but it will make a nice Winterfest event. To buy a hand for $30, call or text Chris Laidley at 705-862-2616 or email info@laidley-stationary.ca. (This event runs until April 6).

All weekend long as usual, there will be food and snacks available from the Recreation Centre kitchen, upstairs, courtesy of the Lions Club. These include burgers, sausages, chili cheese dogs, grilled cheese sandwiches, soup and more.

But back to Friday, the NEMI public library will host its ‘Fun and Games Pizza Party’ with board games to go along with the snack. This is noon to 2 pm, so everyone can enjoy their PD day while dining and having fun.

Also on Friday, before the “big kids” hockey tournament starts, there’s free public skating from 1 to 2 pm.

At 6 pm, the action-packed Lions Winterfest hockey tournament kicks off and carries on Saturday and Sunday with games starts at 9 am both days.

Part of the fun is the annual Winterfest Dance, at the Rec Centre, beginning at 9 pm Saturday to the DJ strains of Beth. This is an age of majority licensed event and admission is $5. Prizes to be won!

Saturday and Sunday, from 8:30 am until 11 am both days, come on up and enjoy ta Winterfest Breakfast. Pancakes or scrambled eggs or, if you’re really famished, both. See the menu and the full program on pages 14 and 15 of this week’s paper.
