Little Current Library News

by Marian Burnett

June 20 was the final Library Board meeting before the summer break. But Library Board members will continue to be busy with the upcoming fundraiser, the Second Annual Book Sale. This year the event will be part of Canada Day activities, and the library will have its book kiosk on Water Street along with the other booths featured on July 1. Volunteer Nina Coates hopes sales will match last year’s excellent results. Once again, there will be huge bargains for holiday reading. Call Maureen if you would like to help with the book sale, 705-368 2017.

The library has been the scene of many events so far this year. Pauline Tofflemire, Dorothy Atchison and Lamar Hyatt rented the activity room for their art classes. Pauline gave watercolour classes once a month, January to May. Her own paintings are being featured in the library’s current art display. Detlef Heiser will also be showing his beautiful woodworking pieces over the summer.

On May 18, Sandy McGillivray presented his project “The Little Current Story in Pictures, Volume 1,” using the large screen for his interesting photos of the early days. A staunch supporter, Mr. McGillivray’s CD is for sale with profits going to the library.

Librarian Karen Gallo is pleased to have lined up two students to work over the summer. These placements are government funded. In August, Science North reps are coming to present “Building It Up” and “Body Business,” a day of hands-on activities at the library, geared to families.

The Library Board members are: Ned Martin, Chair; Maureen Armstrong, Deputy Chair; Laurie Cook, Municipal Rep; Rosemary Burnett, Mike Easton, Karen Nesbitt, Nina Coates, and John Royal. Summer hours in effect July and August are listed on bookmarks for you to pick up at the desk. Board and Staff welcome our seasonal visitors and old friends to make use of this excellent local resource over the summertime. The children’s section is an inviting spot to bring young readers who are out of school.

Have you visited the Young Adult section? Regular patron Gail Murray says, “These books are popular with adult and senior readers too.” Meanwhile, Mrs. Gallo tells us, “Watch this paper for announcements about upcoming programs for seniors.”
