In spite of the great urge to be outside with the arrival of warmer days, the town library is still a welcome place for many of us to take a break. In fact, the Garden Club meets there on the first Thursday of every month rain or shine.
Exciting plans are in the works for spring and summer months. In May, retired teacher John Savage will give workshops featuring the use of iPads on Friday afternoons, May 8, 22 and 29. Sign up and bring your own or use the library’s iPads. Barbara Baker’s excellent tech classes will continue in September.
A Capacity Grant from the Ontario Government has made possible the purchase of needed equipment and some additional Tuesday morning help from our “Tech Guy.” Patrons can now meet with Wes Cline on every second Tuesday from May 19 into November. “It’s a much needed service” according to Karen Gallo, library assistant, “judging by the line-ups, usually seniors needing Wes’ help to get started with new devices.”
The art scene is as exciting as ever at the library. Creative Kids, the delightful display of children’s art continues until May 31. It has been wonderful to see all the young people who have been in to see their own or their friends’ creations. A big thank you to the teachers at Little Current Public School.
Volunteer Linda Jack has sent out the call to artists for The Summer Show, an annual event featuring a great variety from many accomplished area artists. Works will be received June 11, 12, 13 at the library and the show will run all summer from June 20 to Labour Day. Susan Lampinen and Sharon Preen’s plein air works will be featured. “These artists favour Manitoulin landscape and subjects,” says Linda. “And they have offered to lead a paint out activity from the library on June 13. Should be fun!”
Speaking of volunteers, the library board is grateful to Donna Wolfe and Ellinor Leonard who worked diligently behind the scenes this year to search out grants to help with special programs. And remember, our patrons’ suggestions are welcome—leave yours with us and help keep NEMI Public Library the place in town where there is something for everyone.
On a somber note, on April 23, the library lost a dear friend with the passing of librarian Judy Kift’s husband Ed. The entire library community extends its sympathy to Judy and the Kift family.
