Little Current Library News

February is a wonderful time to catch up on reading or to join in on an activity that gets us out of the house.

Our community library in Little Current is a cheery place to visit during winter months. The short-listed Giller prize books are all in. The first, ‘Bellevue Square’ by Michael Redhill, has given rise to lively discussions among readers. It begins with a mysterious doppelganger sighting in a well-known Toronto neighbourhood. A parade of unusual and vivid characters circle the protagonist. The result is a challenging read, culminating in a big (some will say over the top) conclusion. The other Giller selections are: ‘I am a Truck,’ ‘Son of a Trickster,’ ‘Transit’ and ‘Minds of Winter.’ Call to reserve as these books are in high demand.

Two new novels have arrived from the Genealogical Mystery series popular with adult readers. Authors are Steve Robinson and Nathan Dylan Goodwin. Thanks to the teachers at Little Current Public School for compiling a list of recommended children’s books. Many were ordered and have come in. For a heart-warming movie, based on the life of a remarkable Canadian folk artist, be sure to check out Maudie. To see titles of recent releases you are waiting for, the library Facebook page will list them soon. “If the book you want is not in our collection‚” Angela Cosby reminds patrons, “ask about inter-library loan.”

The excellent large print section keeps growing. Perhaps you know a shut-in who would enjoy one of these easier-to-read books.

The seniors’ classes funded by a grant from the province continue into February. Yoga for seniors and the iPad classes are now in progress. Meanwhile, many other activities continue to provide enjoyment and learning every week. There are art activities, knitting, Bridge, board games. New faces at any of these are most welcome. Are there any crib players out there? Scrabble anyone? Bring a friend and enjoy an informal game on a Friday afternoon. The library regularly highlights local art, and artists are reminded to inquire about opportunities to display their work.

Patrons are appreciating the newly installed magazine display wall. It’s attractive, neat, and much easier to access. Magazines can be taken out for a week.

In order to get ready for the upcoming transfer to an updated operating system, the library is temporarily closed to the public on Tuesdays until February 27. “This allows staff time to create the necessary new records and to re-barcode all materials, a huge task,” says Ms. Gallo. “We thank everyone for their patience.”

Winter will fly by if you make your local library a regular stop.
