LITTLE CURRENT—Conservation and camaraderie were the names of the game recently as members, friends and supporters of the Little Current Fish and Game Club came together in the Little Current Royal Canadian Legion for their annual beef dinner (once known as the wild game dinner but since changed to provide better logistics).
Club president Lou Shortt gave a short address to start the meal (which featured beef from Ice Lake’s Burt Farm—Max Burt was in attendance with apron at the ready).
“They tell me the meal is getting cold,” joked Mr. Shortt, “so I am going to make it very quick.”
Mr. Shortt thanked the many volunteers who “made this dinner good for us” and give so generously of their time to help make the club’s projects such a great success. He specifically referenced the recent raising of the club’s fish hatchery onto new foundations with a cement floor and the many hundreds of hours volunteers and club members spend setting nets, harvesting eggs and sperm, operating the hatchery, transporting the resulting fry to the fishponds and then harvesting the fingerlings to be transported back into big water to grow into a nice walleye catch for anglers.
“This year has been a very good year for us,” he said. “It’s all due to the people in this room who buy tickets for this room and who donate.”
Mr. Shortt called for a moment of silence for those members “who are no longer with us” and those supporters who would normally be at the dinner but illness has kept them away.
The evening progressed with plenty of good food, moderate drink and a whole lot of animated conversation. In a hilarious coincidence, the first table to be drawn to attend the buffet was table number one.
