Lions reflect on one of the most successful Haweater Weekends in recent memory

LITTLE CURRENT—‘The most spectacular fireworks yet,’ has been the oft repeated phrase since the grand finale of the 54 edition of Haweater Weekend wrapped up August 6, and Little Current Lions Club President Bruce Burnett couldn’t agree more.

“What a great year,” he enthused to The Expositor following a few days of rest.

He couldn’t say enough about the new events to Haweater Weekend and the draw they provided, the midway specifically. “We’ve secured them for next year already,” he said.

The Huron Bass Tour Haweater Cup saw 21 boats entered and a cash donation to the Lions just shy of $1,000.

“The cardboard boat races were a success again with 20 boats entered this year and the beach volleyball tournament had a record number of teams entered,” he shared. “The parade was terrific and the Slingshots said they want to come back next year, too.” (The parade was filled with a group of travelling Polaris Slingshots, each customized in a unique way.)

Lion Bruce’s favourite Haweater project, the mixed slo-pitch ball tournament, went off without a hitch too with 16 teams and many more wanting in. Winning the tournament this year were: A division, Steve Rydell and Runnin’ and Gunnin’; B division, Whittier Gauthier; and C division, Dawson Campbell and the Shotgunners.

“The fireworks were the best ever. I timed them—it was over 20 minutes. Everyone I talked to said they were the most amazing fireworks yet.”

Lion President Bruce was effusive in his praise for the Northeast Town staff who went above and beyond to make sure Haweater Weekend was a success. “Without them we wouldn’t be able to put on as much as we did.”

The Lion President also thanked the many hardworking Lions Club members and volunteers for helping to put on such a world-class event before turning his thanks to the many people who attended.

“Haweater Weekend has always been our gift back to the community for supporting us the whole year through so thank you, migwetch for coming, and we can’t wait to see you back next year!”
