Christians calling all LGBTQS2S+ abominations need to review Christ’s teachings
To the Expositor:
I am writing this letter on the Saturday of Manitoulin Pride Weekend 2024. This past Thursday the Pride Flag was proudly raised in Little Current.
Tomorrow, Sunday morning, the Pride Christian worship service is taking place at the Little Current United Church and shortly after that, the annual Manitoulin Pride Parade kicks off.
There is so very much more to Pride Manitoulin but at the end of the day it’s a family friendly, fun and informative event supporting and recognizing the LGBTQ2S community on Manitoulin Island and around the world.
As we witness the joy and festive attitude at Pride Manitoulin and the huge amount of people supporting and participating in it, I am both saddened and extremely concerned with a still very prevalent and ever-increasing bigotry and hatred towards the LGBTQ2S community in the United States, Canada and right here on our back door in Ontario.
For the most part this bigotry and hate stems from Christian nationalists within the far and alt right political spectrum. In Canada, many Christian nationalists wear the cloak of social conservatives within the federal Conservative Party of Canada with the more extremist of these now a big percentage of Max Bernier’s alt right PPC Party and right here in Ontario in Derek Sloan’s alt right Ontario Party.
The ultimate objective and part of the current agenda for all Christian nationalists is the “reversal of the separation of church and state in government and implementation of a Christian-run government.
If their objective is ever allowed to happen it would immediately delete most all rights of women, the LGBTQ2S community and anyone of any religion other than Christianity to start!
Sadly, it has become very evident that the beginning of a person’s indoctrination to Christian nationalism is beginning in some (not all) small non-denominational Christian churches here in Ontario and all across Canada and the US where extremist Christian pastors preach hate against the LGBTQ2S community and people of different religions, referring to them as abominations and that they are all going to burn in hell.
With that being said, I know lots of really good and decent religious people including some Christians who are truly following the teachings of love, equality, diversity and acceptance that their Brown man, Jewish profit, Jesus Christ preached. A lot of churches now welcome the LGBTQ2S community and perform same sex marriages and many churches now hold special multi-faith services at times throughout the year.
All freedom-loving democratic people must stand up and denounce the bigotry and hate that Christian nationalism spews and to collectively state that we will never tolerate a reversal of the separation of church and state.
Through it all I have recently seen a bright ray of hope in the words of a lady from Little Current who responded to a social media post on this very issue with this very comment:
“I am against any and all cases of hate and bigotry. I have no religious affiliations and no particular political passions. I believe in all of us being entitled to our own beliefs and opinions and we should be able to discuss, if desired, anything in a civilized and respectful manner. The internet, unfortunately, has made that impossible it seems so I refuse to engage any more with people that can only rebut using hateful, hurtful and frankly vicious rhetoric. I am frankly very saddened but still have hope and faith in man’s humanity to man.”
Thank you,
