Links for the people who would like to push back and contribute to the effort
To the Expositor:
The recent Expositor article on the Enbridge Line 5 pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac does a good job of pointing out the danger and likely devastation of a failure in the line, but it doesn’t really say what the people of Manitoulin in particular, and Ontario in general, can do about it.
Line 5 is not just a State of Michigan problem—it’s an Ontario problem as well. Enbridge is a Canadian company, Line 5 carries petroleum from Canada to Canada across Michigan, and areas that will be affected by a spill include Cockburn Island, Manitoulin Island, and the whole east shore of Lake Huron.
Many people in Michigan are working to see Line 5 decommissioned. But, although the lakebed is held in public trust for the people, the Michigan legislature and the state’s governor are financially beholden to corporations, including Enbridge, and corporate profit takes precedence over the public good.
I believe there are also many people on Manitoulin, and across Ontario, who would like to push back, who would like to contribute to the effort to have Line 5 decommissioned. The best way to do that, I believe, is by supporting the two organizations that are leading the effort:
