Letters: A veteran’s son comments on Juno Beach controversy

Veterans universally express dismay over condo plan

To the Expositor:

The Expositor provided a very genuine view of Juno Beach Normandy on D Day from a resident of Manitoulin Island (May 18 2022 ‘Island’s last Juno Beach invasion survivor dismayed at plans to build condos close to beach museum area.’).

Given the preparation of which my father and uncle were part of, as were thousands of allies, I share the dismay of the French today as expressed by your resident of the Island.

My uncle and aunt were married as troops headed to England; they also had a one-year-old child—as many troops did.

The campaign to end the encroachment of condo building and plans at Juno, and the Juno Beach Centre, is gaining widespread support. Also, my uncle and aunt were summer residents of Manitoulin and my visit was thoroughly enjoyed. All veterans lost friends, the Juno Beach Centre attests to that.

Lest we forget.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The concerns Mr. Bates outlines are genuine. The government of Canada, with the support of the French government, last year purchased the proposed condominium property at Juno Beach and has halted any development plans.
