Letter: Fail to learn from history, make the same mistakes

Writer lays inflation at the Liberal doorstep

To the Expositor:

If we do not learn from history then we are bound to make the same mistakes again.

Trump protectionist tariffs are not new. US President Herbert Hoover signed into law tariffs of 40 percent and 60 percent. Subsequently the stock market fell and “The Great Depression” began. Of course, I don’t remember it but my Grandparents suffered through it, as did millions of North Americans, but I do remember the worst inflation in Canada since WW2 when my 1980 mortgage rate jumped to 22 percent. This was under a Trudeau-led Liberal government.

Forty years later, under another Trudeau-led Liberal government, we had another “Great Inflation.” Now, with the polls indicating yet another Liberal Government, this one led by a Trudeau advisor, let’s call him “The Trudeau Godfather,” I am sad to think Canadians have not learned from history.
