Writer warns against electing someone who will gut our social safety nets

I know that I’m not alone in being concerned and wary about the politics of fear and loathing south of the border and around the world. We have no control over Trumpism in the US. However, we should worry about all the things he has done that were never said during his election campaign. He never mentioned DOGE or everything he has done to shake the American Constitution and gut all the climate safeguards on pollution and our Great Lakes water. Thousands have lost their jobs.
On our side of the border, I worry about certain rhetoric I hear in Canada. “Let’s make Canada great.” I’m sorry, Canada is already great! Poilievre’s rhetoric sounds a lot like the slogans we heard from Trump. What is he not saying? What part of our institutions and what makes us proud Canadians will he sacrifice? Will he gut the CBC, network and broadcasting institution? Nothing is more Canadian than the CBC. It I the most reliable public broadcasting system in North America. Have no doubt! It is on his radar.
This is the man who supported the truckers in Ottawa. That may be well and good. What upsets me is he said nothing about respecting the businesses and citizens of Ottawa. They have to endure the disrespecting noise and tunes. What about the right of our Ottawa businesses, friends and families whose rights were violated. He said nothing about that.
To the Canadian people I say, “do you want a man like this to run your country or even be elected at all?” Think hard about your vote. Be careful what you wish for!
