LITTLE CURRENT—A Little Current Public School (LCPS) team has taken the overall Day Winner championship at the Rainbow District School Board (RDSB) Math, Science and Technology (MST) Olympics held at Science North on April 11.

The LCPS Team 1, coached by Casey Boisvert, made up of Grade 7 students Mackenzie Green and T.J. Green along with Grade 8 students Cat Rose and Alan Wilkin, was chosen as the overall Day Winner (most consistent team) at the event.

Grade 7 and 8 students in RDSB schools participated in the MST Olympics and in total over 140 students took part in the event, which has become an annual tradition for the board.

“We are fortunate to have Science North in our community,” said Director of Education for RDSB Norm Blaseg. “Students have access to leading edge learning right here in our own backyard.”

Students begin the competition with questions that test their knowledge and skills in math, science and technology. Students obtain a score based on their responses. At the end of the day, scores are tallied to identify the winners.

In the early afternoon, students gathered in the Science North cavern for a technological design challenge, prepared and evaluated by the staff at Science North. Students are tasked to build a structure using simple materials, including straws, tape and popsicle sticks. The structure is then used to accomplish a pre-determined task set by Science North staff.

“All students participating in this event receive a t-shirt with the Math, Science and Technology Olympics logo,” said Kerry-Lynn Martel, program coordinator for Math, Business, Health and Physical Education. “T-shirts are given to students in advance, so they can personalize them with tie-dye colours or school logos in a show of team spirit.”

“As you walk around the cavern, you can’t help but notice the smiling faces and light-hearted chatter as they join together in the spirit of friendly competition. It is a great day for everyone!”
