Traffic stop results in criminal charge
On Sunday, August 26 at approximately 10:13 pm, an officer from the Manitoulin-Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 540 in Billings Township.
The officer observed a violation and conducted a traffic stop. An investigation revealed that the driver had been consuming alcohol.
As a result, Richard St. Jean, age 27, of Whitefish has been charged with driving with over 80 mg of alcohol in blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on September 26.
The OPP reminds motorists that there is no safe amount of drug or alcohol consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects an impaired driver is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
Long weekend calls for service
There were 125 calls for service for the Island over the Civic Holiday long weekend which included: six assaults, two break and enters, three thefts, one mischief call, 31 Liquor Licence Act occurrences, nine noise complaints and nine 9 RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) checks.
Of those calls for service, the following charges were laid: 21 traffic violations charges, 30 speeding charges, one seatbelt charge, 10 other Highway Traffic Act charges and 35 Liquor Licence Act charges.
Rainbow Ridge break-in
Police report that at approximately 5:24 am on Saturday, August 25, a report of a suspicious ATV in the area of Rainbow Ridge Golf Course on Clover Valley Road in Assiginack came in. Upon attending the scene, police found the glass of a door at the main entrance to the golf course had been shattered, but entry had not been gained.
A scenes-of-crime investigator attended the golf course to take evidence. A photo of the ATV has been shared on the Rainbow Ridge Golf Course Facebook page.
