Youth charged with weapons offences

On December 21, 2016, the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a youth waving a knife at a second youth.

As a result of the investigation, a 17-year-old from Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation was arrested. The victim was not injured in the incident.

The youth has been charged with the following: Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88 of the Criminal Code of Canada; uttering threats, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada; and assault with a weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The youth was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice on February 7, 2017, at 10 am, in Gore Bay. 

Driver charged with drug possession at OPP traffic stop

On December 22, 2016, a member of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on Highway 6, at Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI) Township. 

As a result of the investigation, a 27-year-old of Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation has been charged with possession of cannabis marijuana under 30 grams, contrary section 4(1) to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on January 17, 2017.

Driver charged for refusing to provide a breath sample

In the early morning of December 18, 2016, a member of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop in the Town of Little Current. The officer demanded the driver provide a sample of breath at the roadside into the Approved Screening Device to test for alcohol.

The driver refused to comply with the demand, and was arrested.

As a result of this investigation, a 46-year-old female of Little Current has been charged with refusing to provide a sample of breath on demand, contrary to section 254(5) of the Criminal Code of Canada. Her licence to drive has been suspended for 90 days.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on February 7, 2017.

The OPP is reminding motorists that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects a driver is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately. 

Vehicle in the ditch leads to numerous charges

In the early morning hours of December 23, 2016, members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a vehicle in the ditch on McLean’s Mountain Road, just west of Little Current. The driver was arrested after officers determined he was impaired by the consumption of alcohol. 

As a result of this investigation, a 22-year-old male of Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation has been charged with the following: impaired care or control of a motor vehicle, contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada; care or control of a motor vehicle with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in his blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada; uttering threats, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada; and assault with intent to resist arrest, contrary to section 270(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada (two counts).

His licence to drive has been suspended for 90 days.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on February 21, 2017.
