Manitoulin OPP seeking help with assault
The Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is seeking the public’s help in identifying a person of interest and subject vehicle in an assault investigation.
The incident occurred on November 12 at approximately 9:30 am on the side of the road on Highway 540 near Silver Water. The person of interest is described as an Indigenous female, approximately 5’6” to 5’7” (170 centimetres) tall, with medium length wavy hair, between 40-50 years old, wearing a black coat, black pants and large boots.
The subject vehicle is described as a black or dark coloured, newer model SUV, possibly a GMC or a similar model, with dark tinted windows. It has a white and blue coloured sticker on the bottom right corner of the rear window.
The victim of the assault, a female, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital and was later released.

Motorcycle collision leaves one person with serious injuries
The Manitoulin detachment of the OPP is investigating a single motor vehicle collision that resulted in one person sustaining serious injuries.
On November 14 at approximately 5 pm, the Manitoulin OPP responded to a single motor vehicle collision involving a motorcycle on Cardwell Street in Assiginack township.
The driver sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital by Manitoulin Emergency Services. The driver was subsequently transported to a Sudbury hospital by Air Ornge.
The OPP’s technical collision investigation (TCI) unit is assisting with this investigation.
Cardwell Street was reopened after being closed for several hours. The investigation is ongoing, and further information will be released as it becomes available.
Suspect arrested in M’Chigeeng residence for assault and possession of handgun
As a result of information obtained during an investigation into an assault, a search warrant was sought and granted for a residence located at 45 Mnaawnkwad Drive in M’Chigeeng First Nation.
On Friday, November 15 UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service Crime Unit and uniform officers, OPP community street crime unit (CSCU), OPP Emergency Response Team and OPP canine unit, executed the search warrant and arrested the individual sought in the assault.
A search of the residence revealed a loaded semi-automatic 9mm prohibited handgun, an imitation firearm that looks like a sub-machine gun, two large quantities of what is believed to be controlled substances, $4,200 in Canadian currency, indicia of drug trafficking (scales covered in white powder).
The accused is an adult male who will be attending a bail hearing to face the following offences: assault, careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition, possession of a firearm, prohibited or restricted weapon obtained by crime, possession of imitation weapon for dangerous purpose.
The police reported that this is an isolated incident and is not connected to any other current investigation being conducted by UCCM Police. There is no threat to members of the community.
The name of the accused will be released once the information has been sworn to before the courts. This remains an active investigation with the UCCM Anishinaabe Police Service Crime Unit and more charges may be laid once analysis of the substances seized has been verified.
Traffic stop leads to drug charges
Just before 3 pm on November 15, a UCCM uniform officer observed a male party who was wanted by UCCM for fail to attend court for a previous assault charge.
The male was observed driving and was also known to be a suspended driver.
A traffic stop was initiated and the driver was confirmed to be a suspended driver and to have an outstanding arrest warrant for fail to attend court.
A search incident to arrest located approximately 22 grams of what is believed to be cocaine (crack) on his person.
As a result, the male party has been charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking to wit: cocaine, a schedule 1 drug, driving while suspended and fail to attend court (for previous charge of assault).
The male party was processed and released on an undertaking with a later court date.
Dangerous operation of vehicle leads to impaired and drug charges
One person has been arrested and is facing several charges following a traffic complaint about the dangerous operation of a vehicle on Highway 6 near Espanola.
On November 7 at approximately 10 pm, the Manitoulin detachment of the OPP received traffic complaints reporting that a vehicle was driving dangerously at a high rate of speed on Highway 6, near the Town of Espanola.
Officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on Highway 6. Officers determined the driver had an outstanding warrant and was arrested. While speaking to the driver, police determined alcohol had been consumed and the driver was transported to Little Current detachment for further testing.
Additionally, officers located over 12 grams of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of $1,200 and imitation brass knuckles.
As a result, the driver, Kieran Nahmiwan, 30, from Wiikwemkoong was charged with operation while impaired-alcohol, possession of a Schedule 1 substance, cocaine, two counts of failure to comply with undertaking, failure to comply with release order, other than to attend court, dangerous operation, fail to stop for police, drive vehicle with cannabis in open baggage, novice driver-blood alcohol concentration above zero.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on December 4.

Single motor vehicle collision leads to impaired charges
One person has been charged with impaired operation following a single motor vehicle collision.
On November 5 at approximately 10 pm the Manitoulin OPP responded to a single motor vehicle collision, involving a pickup truck going into the ditch at the intersection of Highway 542 and Perivale Road West, Campbell township.
While speaking to the driver, police determined alcohol had been consumed and the driver was arrested for impaired operation. The driver was transported to the Little Current detachment for further testing where he refused to provide a breath sample.
As a result, the driver Joshua Fogal, 31, from Carnarvon township, was charged with operation while impaired alcohol and refusal to comply with demand.
The pickup truck was impounded for seven days, and the driver’s licence was suspended. The driver did not require medical attention.
The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice bail court on November 6 and was remanded into custody.
Approximately $66,000 of drugs seized following impaired arrest
One person has been arrested and charged for impaired operation and drug related charges following a traffic complaint on Highway 17 near Nairn Centre.
On November 9 at approximately 7 pm, the Manitoulin OPP received a traffic complaint involving a pickup truck on Highway 17 near Nairn Centre.
Police located the pickup truck on Jacklin Road in the Town of Espanola and conducted a traffic stop. While speaking to the driver, police determined alcohol had been consumed and the driver was transported to the McKerrow detachment for further testing.
Additionally, officers located over 660 grams of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of $66,000, and three suspected oxycodone pills with an estimated street value of $45.
As a result, the driver, Ashley Jacko-Metansinine, 30, from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, was charged with operation while impaired by drugs, possession of a Schedule 1 substance-opioid (other than heroine), possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and drive motor vehicle with liquor readily available, driver motor vehicle-fail to display two plates, drive motor vehicle with no permit, and operate a motor vehicle without insurance.
Ashley Jacko-Metansinine appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice bail court in Sudbury on November 10 and was remanded into custody.
Impaired arrest leads to seizure of firearms
One person has been arrested and charged for impaired operation of a vehicle following a traffic hazard complaint on Highway 540 in Burpee and Mills Township.
On November 9 at approximately 3:45 am, the Manitoulin OPP responded to a report of a traffic hazard involving a pickup truck. Officers attended the area and observed a pickup truck matching the description travelling eastbound on Highway 540.
A traffic stop was conducted, and while speaking to the driver police determined alcohol had been consumed and the driver was transported to the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service for further testing. Additionally, officers located and seized five firearms and ammunition from inside the pickup truck.,
As a result, the driver, Raymond Shawande, 55, from Wiikwemkoong was charged with operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), and five counts of careless storage of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on January 21, 2025.
