Collision leads to impaired driving charges

One person has been arrested and charged for impaired driving after police responded to a single vehicle collision. 
On June 27, shortly before 10 pm, the Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting general patrol on Highway 540 in Aundeck Omni Kaning (AOK) First Nation when police observed two pedestrians standing on the shoulder of the highway looking into the ditch. Police observed a vehicle in the ditch and stopped to speak with the pedestrians.

There were no injuries reported and upon speaking with the occupants of the vehicle, police were able to determine who was driving and that the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to the OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Sage Migwans, 20, from AOK First Nation has been charged with: operation while impaired alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), dangerous operation, drive motor vehicle with no licence. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on July 30.

Manitoulin OPP charge driver following RIDE check

One person has been arrested and charged following a reduce impaired driving everywhere (RIDE) program.

On June 21, shortly before 12 am, officers with the Manitoulin detachment of the OPP were conducting a RIDE program on Highway 6 near Foucault Road in Espanola.

A vehicle approached the RIDE program and did not stop for officers. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle a short distance from the RIDE program. Upon speaking with the driver, police were able to determine the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to the OPP detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Emily Zanini, 32, from Sudbury has been charged with: operation while impaired alcohol and drugs, drive vehicle with cannabis readily available, driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available, driver fail to surrender licence, operate a motor vehicle without insurance, fail to stop for police, operation while impaired blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), dangerous operation.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on August 6. The driver was issued a 90-day administrative driver’s license suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Assault incident being investigated

The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) is continuing an investigation into an assault incident.

On June 22, officers received a call to assist an ambulance with a male person who may have been assaulted.

At approximately 12:40 am, officers arrived on scene at the Wikwemikong band office and located the male victim. He appeared to have suffered lacerations to his head and facial area. The victim could not recall exactly what had occurred and was transported to hospital with minor injuries. The matter is still under investigation.

Driver arrested twice in two weeks for impaired

On Thursday, June 30, while on general patrol an officer with the WTPS observed a male driver consuming an alcoholic beverage from the driver’s seat of their motor vehicle which was parked by the Zipp Thru gas station in Wiikwemkoong.

The officer approached the vehicle and further observed the driver to display signs of impairment by alcohol. There were also empties strewn about the interior of the vehicle.

As a result of this investigation, a 56-year-old male resident of Wiikwemkoong has been charged with the following: impaired by alcohol and impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

The accused was later released and is set to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice (provincial division) in Wiikwemkoong on August 20 to answer to the charges.

Due to the provisions of the criminal code, the name of the driver will be released once the information has been sworn.

Police seek public’s assistance in break enter and theft incident

On June 20 the WTPS received a break, enter and theft complaint that occurred in the main village area on the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory (WUT).

The complainant reported that sometime during the night, unknown person(s) had entered the apartment and stole an unopened air conditioning unit valued at approximately $500 dollars.

The theft incident is still being actively investigated.

Traffic complaint results in impaired charges

On June 17, officers with WTPS received a traffic complaint of a possible impaired driver. A grey vehicle was reported to be swerving all over the roadway.

At approximately 1:30 pm, officers observed the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Upon investigation of the vehicle, police located a male driver who displayed obvious signs of impairment by alcohol.

The male driver was placed under arrest for impaired driving and was brought before a qualified intoxilyzer technician. The driver was found to have alcohol in his system above the legal limit.

As a result of this investigation, a 26-year-old male from Timmins has been charged with the following: impaired by alcohol and impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).

The accused was later released and is set to appear in Ontario court (provincial division) in Wiikwemkoong on July 23 to answer to the charges.

Due to the provisions of the criminal code, the name of the driver will be released once the information has been sworn.

The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service responded to 121 calls for service for the week of June 18-23, 2024.

Manitoulin OPP lay charges in relation to stolen vehicle

One person has been arrested and charged after police received information about a stolen vehicle.

On June 26 at approximately 6 pm, the Manitoulin detachment of the OPP received a report of a stolen vehicle from Castle Street in Sables-Spanish Rivers Township. Police made attempts to locate the vehicle but were unsuccessful.

Later that evening, the stolen vehicle entered the OPP detachment parking lot as the driver wanted to speak with police about an unrelated matter. The driver was subsequently arrested.

As a result of the investigation, Steven Granberg, 47, from Spanish has been charged with possession property obtained by crime over $5,000, theft over $5,000 of a motor vehicle, driving while under suspension, fail to comply with probation order.

The accused was held in custody to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Sudbury Bail court on June 27, 2024.
