WTPS conducts RIDE checks

The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) conducted reduce impaired driving everywhere (RIDE) checks over the weekend of June 1-2 with approximately 132 vehicles checked. There were no impaired drivers encountered and a few cautions were issued for Highway Traffic Act offences.

The WTPS would like to remind the public that police take a zero-tolerance policy to impaired driving and would like to remind the community to continue to drive responsibly. Do not drink and drive, call for a ride or spend the night.

Police investigate break and enter occurrences

The WTPS responded to a few break and enter and attempt to break and enter incidents over the last week, May 27-June 2.

On June 2, at approximately 9:30 am, police were called to an apartment in the main village of the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory (WUT). The homeowner reported that it appeared that suspect(s) may have tried to break into the residence as the window screen was damaged and an air conditioning unit was tampered with.

It did not appear entry was gained but a tool that may have been used was also located at the scene by police.

On June 2 at approximately 8 am the WTPS received a call of a suspicious person at the same apartment complex in the main village of Wiikwemkoong.

A suspect was outside and was attempting to open the door at the complainant’s residence. The complainant yelled at the suspect, and they fled on foot away from the area. Again, no entry was gained.

Police encourage community members to keep their doors locked, keep valuables in a safe place inside the residence. And further, to report any suspicious persons or suspicious activity to police.

Weapons call being investigated

The WTPS received a disturbance call on June 1 at an apartment complex in the main village area on the WUT. At approximately 1 am, officers received a call of a fight occurring involving multiple persons outside of the apartment complex. It was also reported that one suspect was observed with a possible handgun.

Officers attended the scene and spoke to witnesses that stated the disturbance had just ended and other persons involved had fled the area in a black vehicle. One person at the scene had been assaulted but the injuries were not too serious.

Witnesses identified the male suspect and stated he was in possession of a handgun and was pointing it at people. A suspect was observed entering an apartment at the complex.

Police investigation revealed that the male suspect did not exit the apartment and was still inside.

At approximately 2:30 am, officers entered the apartment and located the male suspect hiding within. Officers also located a pellet handgun inside the apartment as well. The male suspect was arrested and returned to the Wikwemikong Police Office without further incident.

The male suspect was found to be on conditions of release as well. As a result of the investigation, a 36-year-old male resident of Wiikwemkoong has been charged with the following: weapons dangerous, pointing a firearm, imitation weapon-use while committing an offence, failure to comply with release order.

The matter is still under investigation.
