Traffic complaint leads to charges
The Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has arrested and charged one person following a traffic complaint.
On May 9, shortly before 2 pm, officers with the Manitoulin OPP responded to a traffic complaint about a possible impaired driver on Clover Valley Road in Assiginack Township.
Police located the vehicle parked on South Bay Drive and, upon speaking with the driver, determined the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages. The driver was arrested and transported to the OPP detachment for further testing.
As a result of the investigation, William Bell, 70, from Assiginack Township, has been charged with operation while impaired by alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), dangerous operation of the vehicle and failure to remain.
The accused will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on June 18.
OPP, Wikwemikong Tribal Police RIDE program results in charges
Two people have been arrested and charged after a vehicle was stopped at a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) program.
On May 16, shortly before 2 am, the Manitoulin OPP and Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) were conducting a RIDE check on Highway 6 in Espanola. A vehicle was stopped for a Highway Traffic Act violation. After further investigation, it was revealed that two of the passengers in the car were under conditions not to be around each other. These passengers were subsequently arrested.
Police searched the vehicle and approximately 63 grams of suspected fentanyl and approximately 83 grams of suspected methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of roughly $33,000, were found. Police also located approximately $10,000 in Canadian currency.
As a result of the investigation, Theo Greene, 19, from Ajax, has been charged with failure to comply with an undertaking, two counts of possession of a schedule one substance for trafficking, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and passenger failure to properly wear a seat belt.
Alexandra Gale, 19, from Toronto, has been charged with possession of proceeds or property obtained by crime under $5,000, obstructing a peace officer, failure to comply with an undertaking, and passenger failure to properly wear seat belts.
The accused persons were held in custody and were scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury bail court on May 16.
