Driver charged following call for service
One person has been arrested on impaired driving, weapons and drug charges in Espanola following a call for service.
Shortly after 9 am on March 10, the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call for service involving a person slouched over in the driver’s seat of their parked vehicle.
Police located the vehicle in a parking lot and, upon speaking with the driver, police were able to determine that the driver was impaired. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to the OPP detachment for further testing.
As a result of the investigation, 49-year-old Jeffrey Santerre from Sudbury has been charged with operation while impaired-alcohol and drugs, failure or refusal to comply with demand, possession of a schedule one substance (cocaine), possession of weapon for dangerous purpose, possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking-cocaine, and driving while under suspension.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Appeal in Espanola on April 15.
The driver was issued a 90-day administrative driver’s licence suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
Manitoulin OPP charge for impaired
One driver has been arrested and charged with impaired driving after police conducted a traffic stop in Espanola.
On March 11 shortly before 10 pm, the Manitoulin OPP were conducting general patrol in Espanola. Police conducted a traffic stop on a motor vehicle for a highway traffic act (HTA) violation on Algoma Street.
Upon speaking with the driver, police were able to determine that the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to the OPP detachment for further testing.
As a result of the investigation, Kenneth Leet, 64-years-old, from Manitoulin Island was charged with operation unsafe vehicle, drive vehicle with cannabis readily available, driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available, two counts of driving while under suspension, drive with improper headlights, fail to stop for police, operation while impaired alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired-blood alcohol concentration (80 plus).
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on April 15.
The driver was issued a 90-day administrative driver’s licence suspension, and the vehicle was impounded for 45 days.
OPP charge driver following traffic complaint
One person has been charged for impaired driving following a traffic complaint.
Shortly after 1 am on March 9 shortly, the Manitoulin OPP responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 17 in Sables-Spanish Rivers Township.
Police were able to locate the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. Upon speaking with the driver, police determined the driver had consumed alcoholic beverages. The driver was subsequently arrested and transported to the OPP detachment for further testing.
As a result of the investigation, Carl Dickson, 20, of Little Current has been charged with operation while impaired alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired blood alcohol concentration (80 plus), drive commercial motor vehicle in contravention of conditions, turn not in safety.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on April 15.

Driver charged at Sheg RIDE check
It didn’t take long for officers with the Manitoulin detachment of the OPP to charge a driver with being impaired after the driver had been stopped at a mandatory alcohol screening Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE)) check in Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI) on the evening of Saturday, March 9.
In a social media post the OPP reported that members of the Manitoulin OPP had set up a mandatory alcohol screening RIDE check on Highway 6 at Townline Road in NEMI for less than 20 minutes on March 9 before they arrested a driver for impaired driving.“The driver was arrested for over 80 and transported to the Little Current OPP detachment for breath tests,” said the OPP.
The driver received a 90-day licence suspension, vehicle impoundment and costs, and a date to appear in court.
