Wiikwemkoong Cultural Festival weekend stats

The Wiikwemkoong Tribal Police Service (WTPS) responded to 94 calls for service during the Civic Holiday Weekend, August 4-7.

The WTPS conducted Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) programs through the Civic Holiday (powwow) weekend. Throughout the weekend, approximately 816 vehicles were checked with no impaired driving infractions encountered and only a few provincial offence notices issued for minor highway traffic act infractions.

“The WTPS would like to extend our appreciation to the community for a safe weekend on the roads,” a release states.

Break and enter being investigated

On Tuesday, August 1 the WTPS received a report of a break, enter and theft in the main village area on Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory.

Unknown suspects entered the residence and proceeded to steal several items from the residence including a flat screen television, an Xbox game console and a guitar. As well, a grey Dodge Ram pickup truck was also stolen but was later recovered. The value of the stolen items is not known currently.

Police are requesting the assistance of the public in this investigation. If anyone has any information related to this offence or any other, they are asked to call the WTPS at 705-859-3141, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. Your information is anonymous, and you may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.

Impaired driver charged

On Thursday, August 3, just prior to the Civic Holiday weekend, the WTPS was conducting a RIDE check on Bayview Heights in the main village area of Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory.

While officers were conducting vehicle checks, a Dodge Ram truck was stopped and the driver was found to be impaired by alcohol. The driver was arrested and transported to the Wikwemikong Police office for breath tests.

A 52-year-old male resident of Wiikwemkoong was charged with the following: operation while impaired and operation over 80 mgs.

The accused was later released and is set to appear in Ontario Court of Justice in Wiikwemkoong on September 5 to answer to the charges.

OPP lay 50th impaired charge of the year

The Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) laid its 50th impaired driving charge of the year, following a single-vehicle collision on Highway 6 in Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands on August 6.

An OPP release explains that a 33-year-old from Sudbury, who was not identified, faces charges of operation while impaired, alcohol and drugs, operation while impaired with a blood, alcohol concentration of 80 plus and dangerous operation of a vehicle.
