LAKE HURON—Despite a warmer than average January, Lake Huron ice coverage is nearly on par with the same time last year.
Thanks to data from the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory in Michigan, The Expositor has learned that as of Sunday, January 24, Lake Huron has approximately 24.3 percent ice cover, compared to 24.7 percent on the same day last year. This is a far cry from the record cold of January 2014, which saw Lake Huron frozen with 72.3 percent ice cover, which was in turn drastically different from January 24, 2013 which had Lake Huron at a mere 11.8 percent ice cover.
