WHITEFISH FALLS— The walls of the Whitefish Falls Community Centre are dressed up in their annual artwork display, featuring the finest works of novice and accomplished artists who entered the 38th edition of the popular La Cloche Art Show.
Art committee chair Carmela Ciccarelli welcomed the artists at the Thursday evening awards gala following the plein aire workshop presented by this year’s Distinguished Artist David Read.
“The mission on the La Cloche Art Show is to promote and provide an attractive and affordable environment for novice and accomplished artists alike to exhibit their work,” said Ms. Ciccarelli in her opening remarks. “To this end, I would like to thank all the artists who entered the show.”
The youth component this year was limited to the students of Little Current Public School and three entries from students out of the region. First place in the Elementary School Art category went to Kaylee Assinawe for ‘Polar Sky’ and second place went to Mackenzie Graham for ‘Praying Loon.’ Honourable Mentions went to Maggie Chapman for ‘Little Town’ and Rheanne Green for ‘Starry Night in Paris.’ The individual entries included Avery Guthrie and Daniel Lavalle of Walden and Conner Adams of British Columbia.
Best of Show went to Karin Fediw for her plein aire work ‘Through the Trees.’ Mr. Read noted that plein aire painting captures the vibrancy and excitement of the subject matter during his workshop, using Ms. Fediw’s work as an example of the fantastic results that can be captured in the method.
The Peg Forbes Memorial Award was presented by Artist Emeritus Ivan Wheale to Patti Johnston for ‘Stay Gold.’
The Art Committee’s Choice Award went to Vivian Ripley for ‘Peaceful Autumn.’
First place in Watercolour went to Debra Lynn Ireland for ‘Otterly Adorable,’ second went to Vivian Ripley for ‘Three Sentinels’ and honourable mentions went to Beth Bond-McCullagh for ‘Calla Lilies’ and Rochelle Neal ‘Planting Pansies.’
In the Oil category, Karen Fediw’s ‘Through the Trees’ captured first, while Patti Johnston’s ‘Stay Gold’ secured second. Honourable mentions went to Karin Fediw for ‘Through the Forest’ and Monique Legault for ‘La Cloche Angel.’
In the Arcylic category Suzanne Lindsay’s ‘Sky’s the Limit’ took first place, Martin Foley’s ‘Lady Evelyn’ took second, while honourable mentions went to Lee Williams for ‘McGregor Bay’ and Peter Bering for ‘Fall Sycamore’.
In Mixed Media, Brigette Bere’s ‘Ordo ex Chaos’ took first, Kathleen Maddy Ross’s ‘Line’ took second and honourable mentions went to ‘Texture’ by Kathleen Maddy Ross and ‘Water Passage #3’ by Richard Edwards.
In the Pastel category, Collete Theriault’s ‘La Cloche Glory’ took home a first, Beth Bouffard’s ‘Sun Kissed’ second and honourable mentions went to two of Susan Lampinen’s works, ‘Cool Retreat’ and ‘Lily Creek.’
In the Drawing category, a first went to Susan Lampinen for ‘View to the Channel’ and second went to Anka Milligan for ‘Roberto,’ while honourable mentions went to Rosie Maddock for ‘The Point of It’ and Donna Kanerva for ‘Bridle Study.’
In the Photography category, John Reeves scored a first for ‘Cedar Island,’ Ken Bennison a second for ‘Solitude,’ while honourable mentions went to Harriet Kideckel for ‘Fence, Zvik Beach Iceland’ and Kerry Butler for ‘La Cloche Morning.’
In the Sculpture category, Don Alemany ruled the roost, taking first for ‘Among the Roses,’ second for ‘Overlooking the Pond’ and an honourable mention for ‘Stroll Along the Dunes.’ Brigette Bere also secured an honourable mention in this category with ‘Gold Helm—Bodhidharma.’
The jurors for this year’s show included Shannon McMullan (fine arts), David Read (fine arts), Kent Wilkens (fine arts), John Knox (photography) and Anita Varden (photography).
“In our working partnership between artists, sponsor and community we must ensure that the La Cloche Art Show will continue to be vibrant and dynamic well into future,” said Ms. Ciccarelli. “The continuing openness, collegiality and understanding of these three links to our chain are a must.”
This year’s art show committee consisted of Trudy Bolduc, Mary Sue Bourget, Jon Butler, Kerry Butler, Carmella Ciccarelli, David Cole, Sheila Cole, Nicole Medynski, Judith Mosher, Rachel Newton, Nancy Perfetto and Margo Thomason.
Ms. Ciccarelli noted the many volunteers who assisted with the show. “I also want to thank our sponsors who continue to support us faithfully each year,” said Ms. Ciccarelli. “To all the volunteers who have dedicated many hours of their time to help out a big thank you.”
The 38th Annual La Cloche Art Show runs from July 4 to July 12 and is open from 11 am to 5 pm daily. The Draw for this year’s door prize, ‘Tamarack Glow’ by David Read, will take place on July 12 at 5 pm.
