Kohyn Eshkawkogan member of silver-winning U17 Worlds team

SARNIA—Kohyn Eshkawkogan of M’Chigeeng First Nation was a member of the silver-medal winning Canada Red team at the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge, held November 3-9 in Sarnia.

Kohyn, a defenceman who plays for the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), had a strong tournament, garnering assists in his team’s first two games of the tournament, which also included a Canada White team and teams from Czechia, Finland, Sweden and the USA.

Canada Red won their first two games of the event, 3-1 over Finland and 6-3 over the USA team, to finish first in their division and receive an automatic berth in the semi-finals. They defeated the USA 7-3 to reach the finals, where they dropped a 3-1 decision to Canada White.

Kohyn was one of 15 players listed as the top 2026-2027 National Hockey League draft talent to watch at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge. An article written by Steven Ellis in the Daily Faceoff read that in the 2027 NHL draft that Kohyn, “has put up great numbers with the Ottawa 67’s this year, entering the tournament with six points in 12 games. It’s not surprising, given the excellent numbers he put up with the GTHL’s North York Rangers last year.”
“Now set for his Team Canada debut, look for Eshkawkogan to earn plenty of ice time, especially on the power play,” wrote Mr. Ellis. “Don’t be surprised if Eshkawkogan challenges (Landon) Dupont for the scoring lead on Canada Red’s blueline.”
