With exams just around the corner, students are handing in their culminating projects and doing their best to stay warm in the cold weather. On Friday, the Winter Formal was postponed until late February. The students who were supposed to attend were frustrated, but understood that the bad weather was dangerous. Donnshai Bruleigh, a Grade 9 student, said, “I am upset that the dance got cancelled, but I’m glad we won’t be driving in dangerous weather.”
The boys’ basketball teams were excited for their tournament last weekend, but the tournament was also cancelled due to bad weather. The boys are hoping to get another chance at a tournament. Also cancelled due to poor weather, the Mustangs boys’ hockey team did not get to play on Friday evening. The boys are waiting to find out when the make-up game will be.
The weather didn’t stop the Senior and Junior volleyball girl teams who had a tournament on Wednesday. Both teams had one win and three losses. The girls were proud of themselves and are continuing to practice hard for their upcoming tournaments.
On Monday S.H.A.R.E./Go Green made breakfast for the Grade 11 French class after they raised $219.30 for the Give Change to Make Change campaign. Students in S.H.A.R.E. got to school early to make chocolate chip pancakes and bacon for the class. The S.H.A.R.E group is deciding what project to work on next, and there will be an online poll to get input from the student body.
College applications are due soon for the students who are planning on going to post-secondary next year. There is a workshop about the application process that will take place next week. Students are being given the opportunity to sign up for public speaking. Drafts of speeches are due to Ms. Marshall after exams. Winners can win money and fame. Students can compete at MSS, move on to the Gore Bay competition, and then move into the regionals. MSS has had success in the past with a student winning the provincial championship.
The first semester is coming to a good close, and students and staff alike are preparing for second semester. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
