Kids helping kids: Rainbow Schools collect 257,942 items for area food banks

RAINBOW DISTRICT—Rainbow Schools surpassed their goal in this year’s Edgar Burton Kids Helping Kids Food Drive. For the second year in a row, they topped the quarter million mark!

“Each year, we collect food items and monetary donations to support individuals and families in the communities that we serve,” said Rainbow District School Board (RDSB) Director of Education, Norm Blaseg. “This year, we set our goal at 250,000 items. At last count, we collected 257,942. A total of $30,515 in monetary donations contributed to this impressive total.”

Mr. Blaseg commended the students, staff and trustees in Rainbow Schools for going the extra mile to give. All items collected represents some 130 tonnes of food.

“Our hats go off to the families and local residents who gave so generously to this campaign,” said Mr. Blaseg. “This was a true community effort in Sudbury, Espanola, Manitoulin Island and Shining Tree. We thank everyone who made this year’s food drive another outstanding success.”

“The food collected will go to all the food banks in the jurisdictions served by the board, benefiting students and families in all of our school communities,” added Mr. Blaseg.

Mr. Blaseg thanked Kerri Monaghan, principal of Ernie Checkeris Public School and Carl A. Nesbitt Public School, for championing this effort in Rainbow schools.
