KAGAWONG—Members of the public are encouraged to wear the plaid of a lumberjack to this year’s Winterfest scheduled for Saturday, February 9 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Kagawong Park Centre.
Start your morning with a hot beverage and muffin beginning at 10 am. The Snowflake Cafe canteen opens at 11:30 am with volunteers serving chili, Burt Farm sausages and hot dogs. Be sure to save room for dessert.
Event organizers on the Billings Recreation Committee have been hard at work planning the event since last November which includes a mix of favourites along with new activities. Kids can slide down Snow Mountain and then enjoy maple taffy while warming up at the bonfire.
If weather permits, bring your skates, lace ‘em up and join your friends. Thanks to community volunteers the ice has been maintained throughout the season. Mother Nature has not always co-operated, however the determined community spirit is certainly there.
Members of the Billings Fire Department will be on hand to share fire safety information with the community and have a supply of giveaways for the children. Manitoulin North Shore Search and Rescue will also be in attendance along with a representative from the Red Cross to speak about their work here on the Island, noted Recreation Committee member Charlene Chambers.
Try your luck at lumberjack games for both adults and children. How fast can you stack a pile of fire wood? Bring a pair of gloves and test your skills.
If stacking wood is not your thing, how about playing euchre? Bring a partner and for $5 per person you can enter the tournament. Game starts at 1:30 pm.
Back by popular demand is Jason Quinlan’s dog sled team to provide a demonstration.
Calling all vintage snowmobile owners: you are encouraged to bring your sleds to share your love of building, restoring and riding.
Members of the Recreation Committee invite everyone to enjoy this annual event. The forecast is calling for sunny skies and -10°C so bundle up and have fun!
