Kagawong Summer Fest: fun for the whole family

KAGAWONG—Flyers posted in the community for Kagawong’s annual Summer Fest boast ‘A full day of fun for the whole family in beautiful Kagawong’ on Saturday, July 19.

Start off the day with breakfast at 8 am complete with a stack of pancakes smothered in real maple syrup and wind it down by attending a marine service and blessing of the boats at St. John’s Anglican Church at 7 pm.

Summer Fest is a community effort hosted by the United Church, members of the museum board, recreation committee, volunteer firefighters, and the countless volunteers who join forces for the day.

Some events take place at the Park Centre where others are along Henry Drive, which will be closed off to vehicular traffic for the day. The beach is host to the debut of Flush a Friend at 11 am, which is like a reverse dunk tank. Children can play games on the beach starting at 10 am.

New to Summer Fest this year is Word in the Park, which is an opportunity for local writers, many of them published, to share their love of storytelling. Author Paula Mallea starts of the day-long event at 9 am, which runs until 4 pm.

Car owners are invited to wax up their vehicles to take part in the show and shine from 9 am to 2 pm. Park on the grass by the Pavilion on Old Mill Road/Henry Drive.

‘The First Annual Musical Chairs Dance Off in Kagawong’ is not to be missed. Make your way to the tennis court at 1 pm. Watch for balloons.

Grab a friend and join this amazing scavenger hunt. The list of items can be picked up at the tennis court anytime between 9 am and 2 pm where members of the recreation committee will have an information table set up including a complete schedule of events for the day, iced coffee, cotton candy and lemonade.

The firefighers and OPP will be on site on Old Mill Drive to provide boating and fire safety tips. Keep an eye out for the boot drive at the entrance to the Fire Hall on your way into town.

Returning for a second year is the Boardwalk Artwalk where artists of all genres are invited to showcase their talent. There is no cost to set up a table along the boardwalk at the Park Centre from 10 am to 2 pm. Everyone is welcome.

Burgers and hot dogs will be barbecued by members of the museum board at the pavilion, which is also home to a special edition of the market hosted by Wednesday’s market hosts Karen Free and Ethel Newburn.

Not to be missed is the silent auction at the Park Centre where members of the United Church will be taking bids from 8 am until 3 pm.

Members of the recreation committee will be raising funds for future projects by selling tickets for the Running of the Balls throughout the day. Balls are $2 each or three for $5. If your ball is closest to the hole, you win $50.

Children can have their faces painted at Art World Supply throughout the day and be sure to make your way up the hill to Bridal Veil Esso at 3 pm to take part in the ice cream eating contest.

4elements Living Arts, which has taken over studio space at 91 Main Street (beside the Fire hall), is also hosting a creative gathering from 10 am to 1 pm.
