Kagawong outdoor rink, market given a name

KAGAWONG—The popular outdoor rink/market venue in Billings township will now be known as ‘The Kagawong River Complex.’

At a Billings township council meeting last week, council approved a recommendation from the township parks, recreation and wellness committee (PRWC) for the new name of the complex.

“The outdoor rink facility was completed in late 2022, early 2023,” said Billings Mayor Bryan Barker. “This facility has been a popular venue for the annual Family Day event, the Kagawong market, trade fairs, festivals and various recreational activities such as skating, hockey, roller blading, ball hockey and pickleball.”

Mayor Barker explained that at the PRWC committee meeting on May 27, 2024, the committee recommended a naming contest for the Kagawong outdoor rink, which was approved by council.

“Since then, a call for submissions from the public was issued where 38 name suggestions were received,” continued Mayor Barker. “The committee narrowed it down to a top four and a community vote was held where 158 votes were received.” He noted there was only a one vote difference between the accepted name, and the name that received the second most support, the KAG-A-Dome.

Council directed township staff to purchase a name sign.
