TENNESSEE – University of Tennessee (UOT) senior captain Joseph Maxwell from Evansville began the new track and field season by smashing several records in a competition held at Indiana University in Bloomington this past weekend.
Mr. Maxwell began his season by breaking the all-time program record in the men’s indoor shot put. On the UOT track and field website it was reported that on his final attempt of the day, Joseph launched the shot 19.46 metres (63-10.25) for a Tennessee record, a meet record and his half-metre personal best indoors.
“I struggled a little early on my first five throws and it was on my sixth and last shot of the day that I broke the record,” stated Mr. Maxwell, noting the record mark was just below his outdoor personal best record.
“What I’m going to be focusing on in future meets is more consistency on all six of my throws,” said Mr. Maxwell.
As for the new record, which by the way was at the first meet, “historically this annual meet is a good place for me. I think I’ve set my own personal records the past couple of years we have competed. Maybe at a smaller school, setting a new school record wouldn’t mean quite as much, but Tennessee University has a storied history in track and field. We have had national champions, world champions and Olympic gold medalists here. It means a lot to set a record at such a high profile program.”
