JEROME GEORGE KANASAWE July 4, 1960 – June 22, 2023 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jerome George Kanasawe, who departed peacefully on June 22, 2023 in the comfort of his home on the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory. Born on July 4, 1960 in Little Current, Jerome lived a remarkable life that touched the hearts and souls of many. He was the youngest of 12 children, son of the late Georgina Kanasawe (nee Atchitawens) and the late Carl Kanasawe. Beloved brother to Ursula-baa, James-baa (Jessie-baa), Jeanette (Leonard-baa), Mildred-baa (Stanely-baa), Richard-baa, Thomas (Dale-baa), Bruno, Monica (Hubert-baa), Ben (Darlene), Farrell and his twin Agnes. Jerome was a cherished uncle, great-uncle, great-great-uncle, cousin, friend and an exceptional member of the Wiikwemkoongcommunity. His passing leaves a void that will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Jerome’s unwavering dedication to his passions and pursuits made a lasting impact on those around him. He was known for his love of the outdoors, walking and riding his bike, as most days you would count on seeing him on Wikwemikong Way in the heart of our community. He had a special wave or gesture with those whom he liked to chat and joke around with. Jerome was a participant in the Special Olympics in the early 1990s as a Speed Skater and did so well that he brought back a medal. Then in 2019, as a five-pin bowler and a Track & Field competitor. He also got the opportunity to run with the torch. Jerome approached life with gentleness and kindness, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps. Beyond his accomplishments, Jerome Kanasawe will be remembered for his extraordinary character. He possessed a genuine warmth and compassion that touched the lives of everyone he encountered. His infectious smile, kind words, and generous spirit brightened even the darkest of days. In addition to his family, Jerome Kanasawe leaves behind a vast network of friends and community members, all of whom were touched by his kindness, wisdom and gentle nature. He had an innate ability to connect with people from all walks of life, offering guidance, encouragement and a shoulder to lean on when needed. During this time of mourning, let us remember the incredible legacy Jerome leaves behind. Though his physical presence may be gone, his spirit and the memories shared will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved and admired him. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jerome Kanasawe was held at St. Ignatius Church in Buzwah with wake service which started on June 26, 2023 after 4 pm, Funeral Mass was on June 28, 2023 at 11 am. Family, friends, and acquaintances were invited to join in honouring his life and offering support to one another as we come to terms with this profound loss. This contribution will help ensure that his legacy of compassion and generosity continues to make a difference in the lives of others. The passing of Jerome has left an impressionable mark on all who knew him.
