JAMES IVAN WEMIGWANS

James Ivan Wemigwans, a resident of Wikwemikong, Manitoulin, died peacefully at Wikwemikong Nursing Home, on Friday, April 29, 2016 at the age of 83. Born to Margaret (nee Lavallee) and John T. Wemigwans, in South Bay, on April 1, 1933. Beloved husband of Eteepek (predeceased). Proud father of Johanasee and Nicole Wemigwans. Grandfather of Terrilyn, Tara, Jeremy, Melissa and Michelle St. Germaine. Great-grandfather of Livanna (Brown), Marcus and Abel (St. Germaine), Campbell and Conrad (George), Jordan and Mariah (St. Germaine). Survived by sister Mary Elizabeth (John predeceased). Predeceased by brothers and sisters Leonard Wemigwans (Alice), Mary Jane Charette (Roland), Violet Mabel McGregor (Archie), Sarah Charette (John), Loretta (friend Stuart Abotossaway), Levi Wemigwans and Ernest Wemigwans. Will always be remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends. Jim was a survivor of the Spanish Residential school. During the cold war he was a bomber navigator. From 1952 until 1956 he protected the DEW line and East Coast of Canada. After completing his air force duties, he founded the Inuit-Indian friendship centre in Ottawa. Also among his accomplishments, he worked as an outreach worker in Toronto where he taught many of the youth about Anishinaabe history on the Manitoulin. Family and friends gathered at South Bay Community Centre on Monday, May 2, 2016 from 1 pm. Funeral Services at 11 am on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Our Lady of Grace Church. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Wikwemikong Nursing Home for their compassionate care as well as Christine and Kim, his homecare nurses. Miigwitch, Nookamik to all who visited him.
