J ELGIN MARTIN

March 29, 1917 – June 30, 2014

In loving memory of J. Elgin Martin who left us on June 30, 2014 after a lengthy hard fought courageous battle with lung disease. Beloved husband of Marjorie (Arnold) (predeceased April 2013) for over 71 years. Cherished father of Marie Kirk (husband Harold). Survived by sister-in-law Jean Siberry, and several nieces and nephews. From a very young age Elgin worked hard, rarely taking time for pleasures. He and Marjorie were organic farmers. Over the years he worked at many other short-term jobs, such as logging camps, digging the Sandfield Fish Ponds, Manitoulin Telephone, and for 21 seasons he worked mainly as a groundsman for the Ontario Hydro line crew, retiring in December 1981. He enjoyed his workhorses, watching horse pulls, visiting, reading the Island’s newspapers, planting and harvesting abundant crops of potatoes and peas, which he shared with many. While we’ll no longer share in his knowledge and words of wisdom, he has left many treasured memories, teachings and positive influences for those who knew him well and loved him dearly. Visitation was from 6:30 pm to 9 pm on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at the Triangle Senior Citizen’s Club Hall, Hwy 542A Tehkummah. Funeral Service was at the Hall on Friday, July 4, 2014 at 2 pm. Interment beside his wife at Hilly Grove Cemetery. If so desired, donations to the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (Sudbury Branch), the Lung Association or charity of your choice. Record your memories and condolences at www.islandfuneralhome.ca. Arrangements entrusted to Island Funeral Home, Little Current.
