Island winter fun chases the February blues away

A log sawing competition was only one of the many fun activities held as part of the Zhiibaahaasing First Nation annual winter carnival.

The contestants stand by their creative, colourful and for the most part sturdy cardboard race vehicles prior to the races Sunday afternoon at the Zhiibaahaasing First Nation winter carnival. Awards were handed out for best construction-1st Jeep, 2nd Spider Girl, 3rd Cruiser (Miller and Abbi); Best in show 1-Hockey, Spider Girl 2nd and Jeep in 3rd place; best aesthetic 1st Duck, 2nd Spider Girl and 3rd hockey entry; best spirit-1st Jeep, 2nd Spider Girl and 3rd Hockey; Original 1st Jeep, 2nd hockey and 3rd Spider Girl. In the speed category Green Lightning was 1st with a speed of 40 kilometres per hour, 2nd was the Hockey cardboard race entry with a speed of 36 kph and 3rd went to Jeep with a speed of 34 kph.

A road hockey tournament was held as part of the Zhiibaahaasing First Nation annual winter carnival held this past weekend.

This little miss was all smiles as she showed off her colourful fingernail creations at the craft table during Shtaa Taa Haa days.

Shtaa Taa Haa Days are back in Sheguiandah First Nation. The indoor cup golf games were a great way to warm up after some fun outside.

Cutting wood is still a vital skill for many Island homes that heat with wood. The log sawing contest allowed for Whitefish River residents to strut their log sawing stuff.

Bubbles! Warming up inside was ever so much fun when the bubbles came out at the Whitefish River First Nation Winter Carnival.
