M’CHIGEENG—Members of the Rainbow Ringers Horseshoe Club dominated the results at the second annual All Ontario Native Horseshoe competition, which took place at the Emeric Migwans Memorial Park in M’Chigeeng last month.
Cecile Migwans, a member of the Rainbow Ringers and one of the organizers of this year’s all Ontario championships, told the Recorder Monday, “this year all the first place winners in each category was won by a member of the Rainbow Ringers.”
“This is the second annual All-Ontario Native Horseshoe Championships that we are hosting again this year,” said Ken Migwans of the event. “We had around 60 shooters from pretty well all over, Six Nations, Wikwemikong, M’Chigeeng, Mattagami and from other areas around Manitoulin Island.”
In the competition Friday evening, the ladies and men’s Masters division events were held for those shooters 55 years of age or over. In the ladies’ group, Cecile Migwans was first followed by Denice Wabanose of Wikwemikong, second, and Patricia Migwans of M’Chigeeng, third. In the men’s division, Cheyenne Migwans took top spot followed by Rocky Taibossigai, second, and Morris Emery, third.
Saturday saw the men’s and women’s singles divisions take centre stage. The men’s division winner was Cheyenne Migwans while Tammy Debassige was the ladies winner. As well, the men’s and ladies’ doubles events were held. In the ladies division, Ashley Migwans and Cecile Migwans took top spot, with Cheyenne Migwans and Wade Debassige taking top spot in the men’s division.
On Sunday the mixed doubles were held with Lydia Panamick and Ken Migwans taking first place overall.
“A lot of people love this game and will travel a long distance for a competition,” said Mr. Migwans, “and it is fun to play players from different areas once in a while,” he said, noting the Island Ringers have a league with about 30 players participating.
“Oh yes, we have a lot of people who help organize this event, and businesses and individuals who sponsor the prizes,” said Mr. Migwans.
